Spring House

A mix of the exotic and familiar, the springhouse reflects the unique character of the garden itself. The reed grass for the roof is from abroad, the pine timbers are from the next county over and the bamboo from right here in the garden. While a tobacco barn was the impetus for the design, it’s highly unlikely this inspired structure will ever be confused with a place to hang crops. One of the most dramatic features is the thatched roof, which is said to last twice as long as a conventional roof. A close inspection of the building materials reveals mortise and tenon joint construction throughout. Once inside, visitors often take a moment to recline, relax and enjoy the surrounding views.
