Spring House & Main Pond

This centrally located pond is anchored on opposite ends by two of the garden’s most charismatic structures. The spring house, snuggly situated on the east end, is on every visitor’s must see list. Presiding over the western side of the pond is the pack house, previously a fully functioning tobacco barn. Lush turf pathways connect both destinations, leading guests on relaxing strolls past flowing plantings of woody ornamentals and perennials. Along the way, picturesque views appear at regular intervals, producing an almost rhythmic experience, as each vista creates anticipation for the next.

Plants of interest include contorted mulberry, toothache tree, pomegranate, paper bush, seven sons tree and the bald cypress entry arch near the pack house. In late summer look for a spectacular display of thousands of white spiderlilies flowering under the pines just south of the spring house.
