Swimming Pond

The swimming pond is first encountered by visitors on the left side of the entry road as they drive to the Fire Tower Welcome Center. To access this area on foot, take the gravel path leading east from the Fire Tower Welcome Center. As you meander through long leaf pines and goldenrods, you’d be forgiven for questioning the veracity of your course. However, one glimpse of the 2.5-acre pond and surrounding panorama and you know you’ve arrived at a destination of consequence.

From across the quiet expanse of deep green water to the fields of brooms edge, this austere landscape is defined by its meditative qualities. The mood is furthered by the occasional waterfowl and an overwhelming sense of solitude. One of the best places for contemplation is at the landing, an enigmatic concrete terrace on the southern shore of the pond. Looking to the west, the top of the fire tower peeks just over the pines, serving as a subtle reminder of time and place.
